Under IID Energy’s Regulations Governing Sale and Use of Electric Energy, Regulation number six, it is the customers’ responsibility to protect and safely operate all appliances and equipment in the home or business.
To Protect Your Electrical Equipment and Appliances, IID Energy Recommends...
• Use a surge protector — a variety of low-cost surge protectors are available to help protect your electrical equipment and appliances
• Have a qualified electrician inspect your home or business for proper wiring and grounding
• Install protective devices, such as voltage spike protectors on computers, televisions, video recorders, microwave ovens and other sensitive electrical equipment
• Ask your appliance dealer for assistance in choosing the proper surge protectors and built-in surge protector devices — check the manufacturer’s warranty
• Make sure your air conditioner has built-in protection
• Turn off air conditioners and unplug refrigerators, televisions, and other sensitive equipment during thunderstorms
• Avoid using extension cords and be careful not to overload circuits
In addition, IID reminds customers to use caution when using outdoor electrical equipment.

- Use extreme caution when trimming trees which may effect or come in contact with overhead power lines
- Keep children and pets a safe distance away when you operate outdoor equipment
- Always turn off and unplug tools or appliances before making adjustments or repairs
- Don't use electrical tools or appliances in rain or while standing in water
- Use only weather-resistant heavy gauge extension cords marked "For Outdoor Use"
- If a cord overheats, immediately turn off the electrical product
- Keep cords out of your path and work area
- Install shock-protecting Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) on all outdoor outlets
- Never leave electrical equipment unattended
- If an electrical tool falls into water, unplug it before reaching into the water to retrieve it
