Information For Children & Teachers / Energy Department - Community Page -
Good energy habits are formed early in life, and at IID Energy we believe in the value of energy efficiency education and outreach. Below are several useful tools that will not only explain how it is we get our energy but also how to conserve it and use it wisely.
Web Site For Children Click on the following link to be connected with our Children's Activity Web Site! Living Wise Each year, IID Energy conservation specialists visit schools across the Imperial and Coachella valleys teaching sixth graders how to save power and water through the Living Wise Resource Action Program. The curriculum uses a hands-on approach to conservation. Each child is presented with an energy-saving action kit that contains a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), a nightlight, a high-efficiency showerhead and easy-to-use home-testing materials. The kits also feature a discount coupon good toward the purchase of a compact fluorescent light bulb, valid to IID Energy customers only. For more information, click here to view the Living Wise fact sheet.
Solar Summer School For Teachers Each year, IID Energy provides a limited number of scholarships to local teachers who wish to attend the Solar Institute Summer Camp. To participate, contact our public programs office. About the camp: Educators attending the summer seminar will learn about the science and history of heating, cooling and powering our homes with the Sun. Participants will build solar cookers, model passive solar homes, solar electric cars/fountains, and conduct energy audits. We will visit several local low-energy, solar buildings to see these designs in practice. In addition to learning the science of proper building design (e.g. thermodynamics, electricity, seasonal changes) and how to fit these exercises into your curriculum, participants will walk away with practical knowledge that they can apply in their own lives. Integrating solar energy education into your curriculum can provide an element of excitement and hope for the future.
