IID operates and maintains its interconnected facilities. Transmission service requests must be made in accordance with IID’s Open Access Transmission Service Tariff. Applying for transmission service is separate from the interconnection application, though for efficiencies some steps are shared. 

Each request for interconnection is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and is subject to meeting reasonable needs of the requesting entity. The requesting entity may be an electric utility, a firm-power customer, a private power developer or an independent power generator. 

There are several general steps in the interconnection process. Within legal and technical parameters these steps may be modified by IID on a case-by-case basis depending upon the specific circumstances of the requested interconnection.
