Planting Near IID’s Equipment: Be Sure to Landscape Safely

Landscaping in both residential and commercial settings provides an attractive way to dress up any property. However, landscaping can be dangerous if items are planted too close to IID’s electrical equipment. Keep the following in mind when you’re planning your landscape projects:

  • When planting trees near electrical poles, allow a 40-foot distance between the stump and the pole.
  • Trees should be trimmed to allow a 10-foot clearance between the leaves and power lines.
  • When planting around utility boxes, allow enough clearance for workers to access the equipment. If access is blocked, workers may be forced to remove the plantings.
  • And before you dig, call DigAlert by dialing 8-1-1.

Ever wonder what’s in the green boxes around your neighborhood or even on your property?  Those green boxes house high-voltage electrical equipment that delivers energy to your neighborhood.

In the event of an outage, or equipment failure, it is vital that utility personnel have immediate and safe access to its equipment to make the needed repairs.

For your safety, and that of the electrical workers, it is important to adhere to standards that limit landscaping around electrical facilities.

The utility is reminding homeowners with green electrical boxes on their property to resist the temptation to disguise these boxes with excessive shrubbery or decorative rock or brick formations.

These boxes must remain well ventilated, and customers are reminded not to build structures around the equipment or to attempt to enclose it in any way. Shrubbery should be planted no closer than three feet from the sides and rear of these boxes and no closer than 10 feet in front to allow crews access to the equipment inside.
