The Imperial Irrigation District is a public owned utility district, established under Division 11 of the California Water Code, Sections 20500 et seq. The District is considered a special district in the eyes of the State of California and Federal Government. A special district has to meet the same requirements as a local city pertaining to emergency preparedness and emergency management. The District is the primary energy and non-potable water supplier in Imperial County parts of San Diego and Riverside County. The District provides energy to more than 145,000 customers, which covers approximately 6,471 square miles in southern California.
