It’s just a piece of metal to some, but when thieves see copper, they see an opportunity to make some quick cash. Law enforcement officials attribute the increase in copper theft to a down economy and rising prices for scrap metals. With the price of copper hitting all time highs, its ability to tempt thieves has escalated.
Imperial Irrigation District continues to have major ongoing thefts of copper wire from numerous substations, electrical boxes and power poles. Copper and metal theft costs IID hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. In addition, these crimes weaken the reliability and stability of the IID electric system. This is a dangerous practice for thieves, our employees and you, the ratepayer. The damage they create costs thousands in return.
IID is offering rewards up to $2,500.00 for the information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals stealing IID property. Anyone seeing suspicious activity in progess is encouraged to call 911 immediately.
Should you have information regarding metal theft, IID asks that you contact its customer service department at 1-800-303-7756 – option #2.
