IID Directors and members of the District’s management team joined Joseph P. Kennedy, III (center), President of Citizens Energy Corporation, in presenting a share of $44,500 to three local organizations (Reps 4 Vets, Westmorland Union Elementary School District, and the Humane Society of Imperial County) through Citizens-funded community investment programs.

Imperial Irrigation District (IID) and Citizens Energy Corporation (Citizens) today celebrated their long-standing partnership and shared commitment to delivering meaningful community benefits in Imperial County during a joint press event recognizing local awardees and the broader value of community investment tied to the region’s energy infrastructure.

During the event, IID Board Chairwoman Karin Eugenio and Director Alex Cardenas, on behalf of IID, and Joseph P. Kennedy III, on behalf of Citizens, spoke about the strong relationship between the two organizations and the importance of ensuring that communities connected to major energy infrastructure also share in its benefits.

Ceremonial checks were presented to three awardees: Reps 4 Vets, Westmorland Union Elementary School District, and the Humane Society of Imperial County, funded by Citizen’s Neighborhood Partnership Program and Community Microgrant Program with IID.

IID and Citizens have maintained a long-time partnership based on shared interests in transmission infrastructure running through Imperial County and a mutual commitment to reinvesting in the communities connected to that energy network. Together, the two organizations have worked to ensure that the presence of critical energy infrastructure in the region is matched by tangible, local benefits that support neighborhood organizations, schools, and community-serving projects.

“Our partnership with Citizens Energy Corporation reflects a shared commitment to ensuring the benefits of energy infrastructure extend beyond the transmission system and into the communities we serve,” said Chairwoman Eugenio. “It is important that the people and organizations connected to this energy network see direct, meaningful benefits that strengthen our communities.”

“Partnerships like this help ensure that the benefits of energy infrastructure are reflected in the communities we serve,” said Director Alex Cardenas. “By supporting local organizations and projects, we are helping deliver meaningful, visible impact for the communities we serve.”

Kennedy III, President of Citizens Energy Corporation. “Our partnership with IID is a strong example of how energy-related investments can also support people and communities at the local level. We are proud to help advance projects that strengthen neighborhoods and improve the quality of life in Imperial County.”

The Neighborhood Partnership Program supports community-based nonprofit organizations serving low-income and underserved residents, while the Community Microgrant Program provides smaller-scale funding for visible, high-impact projects that benefit local communities. These programs are intended to translate the value of the energy partnership into direct community benefit.

Through the Neighborhood Partner Support Program, Reps 4 Vets was awarded $12,000 to help retrofit six recreational vehicles that will be used to provide long-term housing placements for unhoused veterans at a local mobile home park. The improvements include modifications intended to enhance safety, livability, and energy efficiency, helping expand stable housing options for veterans in the community.

“Housing-related projects are costly, and in Imperial Valley, the extreme heat adds another layer to the overall operational challenge,” said Brendon Brown of Reps 4 Vets. “Support like this is meaningful because it helps organizations like ours manage those realities while continuing to provide needed services.”

Additionally, the Humane Society of Imperial County was awarded $25,000 through the program to help sustain essential operations during a period of rising veterinary, facility, and supply costs. The funding will support the organization’s ability to continue providing animal rescue, adoption, and related community services that promote public health, neighborhood safety, and quality of life throughout Imperial County.

“Community nonprofits rely on this type of support to continue meeting local needs,” said Devon Apodaca, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Imperial County. “Funding like this helps organizations maintain services, address gaps, and continue serving the community in ways that might not otherwise be possible.”

Through the Community Benefit Micro-Projects Program, Westmorland Union Elementary School District was awarded $7,500 to purchase a custom book vending machine for student use. The project is intended to promote literacy, encourage positive reading habits, and create an engaging way to reward student achievement, benefiting students, families, and the broader school community.

“We appreciate this investment in our school community,” said Ana Perez of Westmorland Union Elementary School District. “This type of funding helps support projects that may be modest in size but meaningful in impact for our students and families.”

District Superintendent Rauna Fox added, “The school district extends its sincere thanks to IID and to Citizens for the generous donation of a book vending machine. This innovative resource will promote literacy by allowing students to earn books, helping to foster a love of reading and support academic success. We are grateful to IID for investing in our students and our community. This donation will have a lasting have a lasting impact by encouraging reading and recognizing student achievement.”

Funds for these two community investment programs come from Citizens through its Upgrade Investment/Low Income Energy Assistance Fund, in support of IID’s major S-transmission line project that strengthens the District’s energy infrastructure.

The event also highlighted the importance of sustained support for nonprofit organizations throughout Imperial County.

Directores de IID y miembros del equipo directivo del Distrito se unieron a Joseph P. Kennedy III (al centro), presidente de Citizens Energy Corporation, para entregar una parte de $44,500 a tres organizaciones locales (Reps 4 Vets, el Distrito Escolar Primario de Westmorland y la Sociedad Protectora de Animales del Condado de Imperial) a través de programas de inversión comunitaria financiados por Citizens.

El Distrito de Riego de Imperial (IID) y Citizens Energy Corporation (Citizens) celebraron su alianza de muchos años y su compromiso compartido de generar beneficios reales para la comunidad en el Condado de Imperial. A través del Programa de Apoyo Comunitario, Reps 4 Vets recibió $12,000 para mejorar seis casas móviles que serán utilizadas en un parque local para brindar viviendas a largo plazo a veteranos sin hogar. Las mejoras incluyen aumentar la seguridad, habitabilidad y eficiencia energética, ayudando así a ampliar las opciones de hogares estables para veteranos en la comunidad.

“Los proyectos de vivienda son costosos, y en el Valle Imperial, el calor extremo agrega un reto adicional”, comentó Brendon Brown de Reps 4 Vets. “Este tipo de apoyo es importante porque ayuda a organizaciones como la nuestra a seguir brindando servicios necesarios”.

Además, Humane Society del Condado de Imperial recibió $25,000 para ayudar a mantener sus operaciones durante un periodo de aumento en costos veterinarios, de instalaciones y suministros. Este apoyo permitirá que la organización continúe brindando servicios como de rescate, adopción y atención comunitaria, contribuyendo a la salud pública y la seguridad en la comunidad.

“Las organizaciones comunitarias dependen de este tipo de apoyo para seguir atendiendo las necesidades locales”, señaló Devon Apodaca, director ejecutivo de la Humane Society del Condado de Imperial. “Este financiamiento ayuda a mantener servicios y seguir apoyando a la comunidad”.

A través del Programa de Micro-proyectos Comunitarios, el Distrito Escolar Primario de Westmorland recibió $7,500 para adquirir una máquina expendedora de libros para los estudiantes. El proyecto busca fomentar la lectura, motivar hábitos positivos y reconocer el esfuerzo académico de los alumnos, beneficiando a familias y a la comunidad escolar.

“Agradecemos esta inversión en nuestra comunidad escolar”, dijo Ana Pérez del Distrito Escolar Primario de Westmorland. “Este tipo de apoyo ayuda a impulsar proyectos que, aunque pequeños, tienen un impacto importante para nuestros estudiantes y sus familias”.

La superintendente del distrito, Rauna Fox, agregó: “El distrito escolar agradece sinceramente a IID y a Citizens por la donación de una máquina expendedora de libros. Este recurso innovador fomentará la lectura al permitir que los estudiantes ganen libros, apoyando su desarrollo académico. Esta inversión tendrá un impacto duradero al promover la lectura y reconocer el logro estudiantil”.

Los fondos para estos programas provienen de Citizens a través de su fondo de inversión y asistencia energética para comunidades de bajos ingresos, en apoyo al proyecto de la línea de transmisión S de IID, que fortalece la infraestructura energética del Distrito.

El evento también destacó la importancia de continuar apoyando a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro en todo el Condado de Imperial.
