USBR Commissioner Burman to present at IID board meeting

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Brenda W. Burman will address the IID Board of Directors and the public during IID’s regularly scheduled board of directors meeting Tuesday. She will make a presentation on the challenging hydrology at Lake Mead and the bureau’s stepped-up efforts to develop drought contingency plans in both basins of the Colorado River watershed to mitigate against looming shortage triggers under the 2007 guidelines.

As Commissioner, Burman leads an agency of more than 5,000 employees who help maintain 475 dams and 337 reservoirs that provide more than 30 million acre feet of water for 31 million people in 17 Western states, including water for one out of five western farmers who produce much of the nation's produce. Burman is also responsible for overseeing the bureau’s maintenance of 53 hydroelectric power plants—generating 40 billion kilowatt hours annually, which is approximately 15 percent of the nation’s hydropower.

Confirmed by the Senate in November 2017 to lead the USBR, Commissioner Burman is the first woman to serve in this capacity since the founding of the bureau. An attorney, she has worked for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the Salt River Project in Phoenix, Arizona.
