IID offers support to federal employees impacted by partial government shutdown

Imperial Irrigation District customers who are federal employees and impacted by the U.S. government’s partial shutdown are eligible for payment deferral.

“The IID Board directed staff to provide assistance to those customers who are federal employees and impacted by this unfortunate shutdown,” said Henry Martinez, IID general manager. “At this time we’re offering temporary suspension of each affected customer’s bills and we will continue to work with them as necessary to help them get through this difficult time.”

IID is offering the affected federal employees extra time to pay, consisting of an additional 30 days to defer payment of their electric bill for a total deferment of 60 days to ensure continuity of service.

Should the partial government shutdown continue beyond that, the district will review further options.

The shutdown is the longest in American history and affects about 5,000 federal employees in the Imperial Valley.

IID took part in two local events conducted by the Imperial County Department of Social Services where local agencies and financial service providers formed a one-stop shop for answering questions and providing information to aid workers with basic needs, loan deferment, utility bills and unemployment benefits.

Any IID customer who can verify that they have been furloughed or are currently working their federally-funded job without compensation because of the federal government shutdown can be granted a deferral.

Customers are asked to have their furlough letter or federal employee identification available and contact IID, especially if they have been given a final notice about their overdue electric bill.

Customers can visit any IID Customer Service Center during regular business hours (Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays) or call IID at 1-800-303-7756 or 1-760-335-3640.
