IID Board takes immediate action to protect district from legislative threat
The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors voted Tuesday to take immediate steps to help inform its decision-making regarding the electrical services the district provides in the Coachella Valley.
“Today, the Board of Directors has instructed staff to retain legal counsel and experts to advise it on all potential options related to the continued electrical service in the Coachella Valley,” said IID Board President Erik Ortega. “We ask that the public have patience as we embark on this process since there are many moving parts to consider before this board can act upon any decisions.”
The district has strongly opposed recent legislation introduced by Yucca Valley Assembly Member Chad Mayes (AB 854) that seeks to change the composition of the IID Board of Directors by adding six new directors from Riverside County in the 2020 election.
Continued President Ortega: “The Board of Directors of the Imperial Irrigation District is aware of the continued actions in Riverside County that seek to change the composition of the IID board.
“The board is committed to making this process as inclusive as possible so that it can benefit from all perspectives and points of view. However, what everyone must understand is that any recommendations or even changes resulting from this process cannot threaten or compromise Imperial Valley’s water rights.
“Let me be crystal clear, any viable option cannot cause undue hardship to the district or any of its ratepayers.”
